The Matriarch established her supremacy in a simple way: by marriage, not birth or position. Collectively, this women had lived longer in the patriarchal church than all the men put together. She was unafraid of any calls to change, when change is inevitable. It didn't matter that a younger and more dynamic voice was speaking. The older woman had spoken longer than any of the men had lived, so she had first say.
Thus, the matriarch ruled the eveen taking on the role of the patriarch when necessary. The ministry of a senior member of the church, regardless of gender (or age), is one of the things that defines institutionalised Christianity. She was attempting to stay true to Christ's own way. Keep things as they were.
Yet she was no dictator. The church existed in two dimensions: the eardrums of the patriarchal rule, and the long-standing living memories of the old church. Under her, the church existed in the bodies of the men that were there: the elders, youth groups and Sunday school helpers. She was in control of the living memories; she held the drifts of the emotional lives of good people.
But the matriarch was no tyrant. She wasn't petty. She had grown up together with these people. It wasn't only her first cousins and aunts that she loved. She had come to know them all like people in her living room. Continue reading...
