Until one discovers execution, there is nothing to manage.  No matter what title you have and regardless of what you do in your vocation, if you’re going to master execution in your organization you have to manage execution.  If you don’t manage it, you’re not going to optimize your ability to execute and over time you’re not going to soar above mediocrity.

 

No matter how you slice it, execution happens at an individual level.  Companies don’t execute, individuals do.  Departments don’t execute, individuals do.  Teams don’t execute, individuals do.  Execution happens at an individual level.  And whether those individuals do it well or not so well makes all the difference in terms of the outcome.
 

As a managing leader you know the future of the company depends on the development of the people that work there.  This means not just the “high potentials”, but everybody.  If you’re generating an organization in which people are committed to mastery of execution (becoming a high performance organization) think about what you’re doing.  You’re developing people to deliver and having them develop others who deliver.  What more could you want?

 

Execution is a discipline of its own and improving at execution is an underlying project that needs to be managed, just as finances need to be managed.
