This is a good example of an environmental success story back there, in my view, that is quite old news to locals who have been working, either through the RSPB or the Heritage Trust, to bring these species back from very near extinction.
Early December saw dozens of pairs arrive at RSPB Bramble nest box with the male SBB spending much of the morning in the nest, not shy of aero-dynamic manoeuvre to impress his lady, low and swift over the lake. He is the only male in the box so is rather cautious but he will be back and each year several pairs rear up four broods over spring and summer. I hope they will outlast the industrialisation of the area.
This morning I found 53 fledglings about to leave the nest. All were about the size of a large rote, sometimes brown-rumped with a black belly, and they were easily recognizable by their red eyes and yellow-orange bill, sometimes with a mauve spot below the mandible, a juvenile is usually olive rather than yellow.
The RSPB has some excellent nature reserves near to where we live, and they are great for the enjoyment of wildlife and nature contemplation. I am a member of the Wildlife Trust and we hold regular feeds at Bramble nest box. If you need to raise funds for your local nature reserve, please take a look on the RSPB website . d2c66b5586
