It is not clear why the rates of time-loss injuries are high in taekwondo. It is possible that in taekwondo, the bouts last for longer periods, and are more time consuming. It might also be that taekwondo is a much more aggressive sport, with a greater emphasis on body contact, than is karate. In taekwondo, the score is based on points, whereas in karate, the score is based on the number of attacks (successful or unsuccessful) and the total number of attacks is the basis of the score.
The total injury rate of 17.75/1,000 A-E (95% CI: 14.45-21.06) for the young adult taekwondo-in is higher than that for the seniors (15.38/1,000 A-E; 95% CI: 13.22-17.56), but the difference is not significant. This is in contrast to the findings for the seniors in the current study.
The authors acknowledge that the present study did not report on the mechanism of the injuries sustained. It would be of interest to find out if the time-loss injuries in the adult taekwondo athletes were predominantly due to contact (compared to the non-contact injuries recorded in the young adults), and if the athletes incurred more injuries while fighting than during training. It would be noteworthy also to know how the use of protective equipment for combat sports affects the injury rates. In sports like taekwondo and karate, injuries are very common. These are of concern, especially the cerebral concussions, which might result in long-term effects such as cognitive impairment, and thus affect the lives of the athletes.
It is noteworthy that the results for LBP injuries were considerably different from those for injuries overall. The latter increased with increasing age and were independent of the number of hours practiced. The data suggested that LBP injuries at least doubled every five years of age. This age-related increase has previously been documented in Taekwondo (Pieter and Zemper, 1997b) and may be related to the force of impact that is associated with techniques involving kicks and strikes (Ragert et al., 2000; Ragert et al., 2002). The higher LBP injury rates reported by the Greeks were for the Greek girls only. Gender differences in LBP injuries have also been documented in other sports (Brown, 1979; Cordts et al., 2004; Niemelä et al., 2000; Ragert and Daneshvar, 2004).
This is the first study to document the incidence of injuries in Taekwondo athletes. The data suggest that the injury rate in the present study was higher than the one reported in other studies. The only previous study to report an injury rate in Taekwondo was a retrospective study by Pieter and Zemper (1997b), which found a rate of 5.4 injuries per 1000 hours of practice.
