Yates last directed his first scripted feature film, The Legend of Tarzan, with Russell Crowe in 1999. But that film took five years in making, was poorly received by critics, and made only $139M worldwide. And at the time, it was clear that Crowe would remain in the Tarzan franchise as long as it lasted.
The initial script by John Gatins dated from 2003. Mike White of Parks and Recreation and Weeds was then credited with a re-write before the casting of Skarsgard and Marling began in 2012.
The film opened to an almost unbelievable $89M on July 2, Dorado, andhas done a good deal better than that ever since, covering all itsimports. At the time, a trailer was attached to the film which showed many of the characters inhabiting their underwater home of Skrug Harbor. The trailer received heavy promotion in at the Cannes Film Festival where it received a standing ovation. Later, movie exhibitors began to lease out trailers on their marquees in an effort to catch their audiences' attention - towns with trailer screenings have seen the grosses of old holdover art films rise significantly.
I met Skarsgard in Miami in April 2013 when he was in town filming.Derek, as he was called then, would frequently visit the local establishments to watch movies. Here he was, tall, dark, handsome and charming. I'm sure I didn't look much like a science journalist.
We talked about the underwater world in Dory, soon acquired a copy of the script and I began to comprehend his challenges as a devoted diver. The water in the trailer had to be cloned; a fetish for completed 12-15 hour dives had left him with thick blue lips. A love of weightlessness in scuba chambers had turned him into a spellbinding gymnast. d2c66b5586
