Hi Tracey,Let's see, I think that the artists were using anatomical pictures in the Middle Ages to make dissections easier. In 1585 the position of the heart was published by William Harvey as the starting point of all anatomy and of the study of diseases. Henry Wotton's book on surgery of 1550 is the first published description of organs and it shows the heart as the most important organ. The first anatomical drawing is the one by Andreas Vesalius, published in De humani corporis fabrica of 1543. But Vesalius is also the first to draw the heart in the position it has in modern times. So all in all, Vesalius is the real father of anatomy! It was in the 16th century that anatomical drawings became popular, first as an amusing illustration of exotic animals or as a whim. Around 1650 the first anatomical atlases were published, either in text or in illustrations. The first atlas was de Back's De humani corporis fabrica of 1662. These atlases were printed in Holland, but were heavily illustrated and also contained many drawings. In France the first three-dimensional printed atlas was the Abrégé de la physiologie 827ec27edc
